Psalm 19:1
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.
in post-Christian America it’s very common that people don’t know what the Bible says about their common objections. Many well-educated people go on and on about how there’s no proof of God when, in fact, the Scriptures slap them across their heads with the plainly obvious. It’s the fool who says in his heart that there is no God for exactly the reason our verse states. The heavens – and all of nature as pointed out in Romans 1 – don’t hint, don’t tease, and don’t infer. They plainly and boldly declare God’s glory and existence. The Scripture isn’t saying that this is some type of ambiguous thing either – it’s as solid a declaration as one can have in life and only a fool will resist the obvious.
“Day to day pours out speech…” Nature is always and forever in the business of telling men and women that God exists. The so-called atheists complain that they haven’t the evidence and that they’re men of science. But true science is built upon logic and logic dictates that if there was once nothing, then there would always be nothing; something can’t come from nothing. This is the false premise behind secular science. They’ve built an elaborate and gaudy mansion on legos. They would have you believe that all of nature – and, while we’re at it, all things beautiful, meaningful and full of goodness and truth too – are sheer accidents. They never care to answer why truth (and science) matter in such a universe.
We don’t vacation at the dump or the water treatment plant. We go to the beach or to the mountains. The real-estate along the shores is so much more desired than the land next to a factory. Many a so-called naturalist boasts about how they “love the outdoors” but, to be true to their premise of life being just chance, they should love the inside of a public restroom as much as a walk on the beach. To argue otherwise is to admit objective standards exist, which obliterates their whole intellectual ruse.
Nature is speaking to us and sinful man is incessantly busy suppressing its constant message of God’s divine nature and eternal power. In sin, we want the blessings of God but want Him to leave us alone. This type of ignorance isn’t due to lack of education but due to moral hardness and bitterness (Ephesians 4:18). An unrepentant man will enjoy his walks in the woods and his beach vacations and still shake his fist at God not because he’s confused but because, deep in his heart, he doesn’t want to admit the obvious. To do so would be to throw himself off the throne. A repentant sinner is, in this way, the man or woman that is finally admitting the obvious about life, nature and themselves. It’s for this reason that the Christian should never be surprised when they see great folly in the world. To be an atheist requires an extraordinary “leap of faith” – that everything came from nothing, that nature is just an accident.
